Your First Time with Cannabis Edibles: What to Expect, Hour by Hour
Reading about edibles is one thing. Knowing what you'll actually feel, and when, is another. Most first-timers go in underprepared — and either take too much or convince themselves it isn't working. This guide walks you through exactly what to expect, format by format and hour by hour, so your first experience is a good one.
Before diving in: if you haven't yet read our guide on how long edibles take to kick in, start there. This article picks up where that one leaves off.
Choosing Your Format: How Different Edibles Feel
Not all edibles hit the same way — and format plays a bigger role than most people realise. Before picking a product, it's worth understanding how each type behaves in your body.
Space Cookies
Cookies are baked goods, which means they're digested more slowly than gummies or liquids. The fat content in a cookie actually aids THC absorption — cannabinoids are fat-soluble, so the butter or oil in a baked edible helps carry THC into your system efficiently. Expect a gradual onset of 60–90 minutes, with effects that build steadily and last 5–8 hours. Our Sativa Space Cookies and Indica Space Cookies are a great starting point — available in Medium, Double, and Triple Strength. Gummies
Gummies tend to have a slightly faster onset than baked goods because they're lighter and simpler to digest — typically 45–75 minutes. They're also easier to split for microdosing, making them a popular choice for first-timers who want to start with a very small amount. Our Canna Gummies (Sativa) are a go-to for daytime use.
Brownies
Like cookies, brownies are fat-based baked goods — so onset and duration are similar: 60–90 minutes to kick in, with long-lasting effects. The higher sugar and fat content compared to cookies can make them feel slightly more intense for some people. Available in Sativa and Indica, both at Extra Strength.
Lollipops
Lollipops are unique because part of the absorption happens sublingually — through the mucous membranes in your mouth as you suck on them — rather than purely through digestion. This can produce a faster partial onset (sometimes within 20–30 minutes), followed by a second, slower wave as the rest is digested. The experience tends to be more layered than with baked goods. Our THC Lollipops (Sativa) are worth trying if you want something between an oil and a traditional edible in terms of speed.
Capsules
THC capsules behave most like medication — consistent, predictable, and discreet. Onset is typically 60–90 minutes and effects are steady rather than building in waves. They're ideal for therapeutic use where consistency matters more than the sensory experience of eating a treat.
Hour by Hour: What a First Edible Experience Feels Like
This is based on a moderate starting dose (Medium or Double Strength) taken on a light stomach. Individual experiences vary — this is a general guide, not a guarantee.
0–30 Minutes: Nothing Yet
This is normal. Do not take more. The edible is moving through your digestive system and hasn't reached your bloodstream yet. Use this time to get comfortable — put on something relaxing, have water nearby, and settle into your environment. Any anxiety at this stage is usually anticipation, not the edible.
30–60 Minutes: Subtle Shifts
You may start noticing very subtle effects — a slight warmth, a change in how music sounds, or a mild body heaviness. Some people feel a gentle mood lift. Others feel nothing yet. Both are normal. Still do not take more.
60–90 Minutes: The Onset
For most people, this is when effects become unmistakable. You'll likely feel a combination of physical relaxation and a shift in mental state — Indica edibles lean into body warmth and calm; Sativa edibles tend toward a more cerebral, lighter feeling. This is also when first-timers sometimes feel a brief moment of "is this too much?" — it usually passes within 10–15 minutes as your body adjusts. Stay calm, breathe, and remind yourself: you are safe.
90 Minutes–3 Hours: Peak Effects
Effects are now at or near their peak. Time may feel different. Sensory experiences — food, music, conversation — are often enhanced. Physical sensations like warmth, heaviness, and tingling are common with Indica. Mental engagement, creativity, and social ease are more common with Sativa. Stay hydrated and avoid mixing with alcohol.
3–6 Hours: The Plateau and Gentle Decline
Effects plateau and then gradually soften. Most people find this the most pleasant phase — relaxed, comfortable, and clear enough to enjoy conversation or a film. Avoid making important decisions or driving during this window regardless of how functional you feel.
6–8 Hours: Wind Down
Effects taper off. Many people feel pleasantly tired — especially with Indica edibles. This is an ideal time to sleep if that was your goal. Drink water, eat something light, and rest.
Building a Consistent Edible Routine
If you plan to use edibles regularly for wellness — sleep support, anxiety management, or pain relief — consistency is key. A few principles:
- Same time, same conditions: Taking your edible at the same time each day (e.g. 1–2 hours before bed) helps your body respond more predictably.
- Track your doses: Keep a simple note of what you took, when, and how you felt. After 3–5 sessions you'll have a clear picture of your ideal dose and format.
- Take breaks: Regular tolerance breaks (1–2 weeks off every 4–6 weeks) keep your sensitivity high, meaning you need less to achieve the same effect.
- Don't escalate too quickly: Tolerance builds gradually. If your current dose still works, don't increase it just because you've been using edibles for a while.
