Can You Taste the Strength of Cannabis?

A space cookie may taste like an ordinary baked treat, while cannabis oil may have a noticeable herbal flavour. Neither tells you how much THC it contains.

Flavour is not a strength test

Sugar, cocoa, spices and carrier oils can influence how a product tastes. Two products with similar THC content may taste different, while products with similar flavours may contain different amounts.

When choosing cannabis edibles, separate flavour preferences from the cannabinoid information on the label.

Sweet does not mean mild

Space cookies can taste familiar, but they are not ordinary snacks. A mild cannabis flavour does not mean low THC content, and enjoying the taste is not a reason to consume more.

Effects can take time to appear. Read our guide to edible timing rather than judging the product by your first impression.

Herbal does not mean stronger

A bitter or earthy taste does not prove greater potency. When comparing cannabis oils, check the stated cannabinoid content and product directions instead.

For background on the formats, see our edibles versus THC oil guide.

Let the label guide you

Check ingredients, allergens and directions. Never taste a potentially spoiled product to test its safety.

Keep cannabis products away from children and pets, avoid combining THC with alcohol, and do not drive after use. Seek healthcare advice if you take medication or have a medical condition, and avoid use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Taste tells you what you enjoy, not how strong a product is.
